There are circa 540,000 words in the English language which is around Five times more than in Shakespeare’s time.
I recently had occasion to take my car in for service, a task that normally takes only a few hours and one for which I patiently wait for while the work is completed, but on this occasion it was going to take a couple of days so arranged a loaner vehicle with the garage to cover this time.
In the true American tradition I have, for the past few vehicle changes opted for reasonably large SUV’s and my current vehicle is no exception with raft of modern accessories designed to enhance the driving experience. So with this in mind when the rental agent showed me to the loaner car (A sub compact) I got in with some trepidation.
My first impression was that I had been transported to Lilliputia as the somewhat confined cabin space and minute controls seem to confound my spacial awareness, undaunted I selected reverse and began to move out of the parking bay, but where was the comforting “Beep Beep” of the parking sensor? Would I have to actually “Judge” the distance to the next vehicle?
After safely maneuvering out of the garage parking lot I joined the traffic on the road outside, leaving what I would normally expect to be a safe gap to the oncoming traffic I pressed the accelerator and was very disappointed by the result, what normally would have propelled me to lead the pack of traffic to the next set of traffic lights only just gave me enough space to avoid a barrage of horn blowing much associated with Miami driving culture.
What does all this tell me? (more…)
